CHINO - Colony and Don Lugo kept it close for a while, but a strong second half allowed the Titans to pull away 48-10 at Chino High School on Friday night.
The game stayed tied for most of the first half until Titans sophomore quarterback Kori Grant found junior Kenneth Grant in the back of the end zone for a 12-yard strike.
The Conquistadores' (1-6 overall, 0-2 Mt. Baldy League) strong first half was due in large part to the play of junior Brent Claeys, who intercepted Grant twice.
"We started off slow," Colony coach Anthony Rice said. "It took us the second half to get things going and get things figured out."
The Conquistadores had a chance to mount a scoring drive but saw it cut short when junior quarterback Matt Montgomery was sacked to end the half.
"We played fairly well the first half," Don Lugo coach Rick Martin said. "We're growing; it's trial by fire with us. ... We have a lot of sophomores on the team only five seniors."
The Titans (4-3, 2-0) set the tone early in the second half when junior Jared Bell scored from 65 yards out on the first play of the half.
Bell also contributed on defense with two interceptions, both of which resulted in Colony touchdowns.
"I needed my guys to come out and play four quarters of football and that's what they did," Rice said.
Bell finished with 140 yards on 10 carries.
Grant finished 8 of 12 for 120 yards, three total touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Conquistadores' lone touchdown came early in the first quarter when sophomore Anthony Wilson punched the ball in from a yard out.
By the time junior Luis Diaz scored on a 48-yard field goal late in the third, the game was already out of reach.
"They got a good group of kids, I don't take anything away from them or their coaching staff," Rice said. "Once they put things together they're going to be a good team."
But just to be certain, the Titans scored three more touchdowns - a two yard run by Dylan Bautz, a 12-yard touchdown by Bell and a rumbling 53-yard touchdown by Bautz.
